One of the most popular computer backgammon programs around is âSnowieâ. This program can be used for playing and analyzing the game and it comes in three versions (player, student and professional). Snowie can be downloaded for free but the trial version will run out after two months. It is then necessary for players to pay a special registration fee or purchase the CD Rom.
There are many reasons why Snowie is considered to be a good computer program by backgammon players at almost every rank and skill level. Firstly, the program gives players the option of deciding between two particular moves (for example, which cube decision or play is better). This is called a roll-out. Snowie provides a side-by-side comparison between the two moves and shows which is better. The program also calculates the value of gammons in an extremely precise manner.
One of the main benefits of this computer backgammon program is that it allows you to import matches that you played at any other site or program into its software. In this way, players are able to analyze games and the program gives them a clear indication of where they went wrong in their matches. Although the text file relating to the moves of the match need to be saved and run through a special conversion program on Snowie, it is definitely an excellent feature that is not matched in other backgammon programs. Players need to remember that Snowie is copy-protected; however the investment in this program is minimal compared to the assistance that it provides in the long run.
